Sunday afternoon I received the news that one of my close friends had passed away. Myself and a few of my class peers were very close to him, we informed our supervisors and classes had been suspended until Thursday to give us the opportunity to grieve and attend the funeral.
Although the sudden passing of our friend was a shock and had heavily impacted us all, we needed to preserver with our project. We had all met in college and immediately became close friends, he was a very friendly and immensely talented person and we all knew he wouldn’t want us to give up on all the hard work we had done over the past three years.
With that being said, it was very difficult to come to terms with what had happened, and I found it very hard to focus on working. I decided to try distracting myself by doing smaller tasks that could be completed.
For the remainder of the time, I began looking more into my printable deliverables. I was researching companies and getting quotes based on a 40-page square book.
Originally, I had wished to have the book cover hard covered but for now, it does not look feasible as the cost prices are too high and most companies will only print a batch of minimum 100 copies. This may mean changing the design or finishes to the book.
Then I began looking into soft-covered books and different binding options. I discovered many companies offer what is called a perfectly bound book, Perfect bound printing is commonly used for magazines, brochures and thicker reports, this method binds your document together with adhesive along the spine to provide a smooth and stylish finish.
The use PUR glue to bind the books as it is much stronger than old-fashioned hot melt glue. PUR binding is more tolerant to higher and lower temperatures as is very flexible and non-brittle, meaning books open flatter without cracking the spine or pages falling out.
Based on a quote from digital printing Ireland a square 40-page matte laminated covered book would cost as little as 10 euro per copy. This could be something to look into further when I get closer to the stage of printing, but I feel it is helpful to keep these details in mind going forward.
Aside from printing research, I began prototyping business cards so they could be ready to send to print in the coming weeks. The business cards will only be used as means of promotion for the social media channels of the project and my contact details.
Following on from last week’s tutorial I have contacted multiple organisations and charities in the hopes of gaining participants, so far I have received a few emails from people who are willing to be involved in the process but I need to spread the word more to gain more participants. Through talking to a few of these women they really like the idea and sentiment behind the project and some of their stories are very moving and very eye-opening.
For next week I will be working on the designs for the mannequins and discovering how to apply the designs.
