The beginning of the week brought a new list of challenges we started the week by making schematics for the exhibition, dividing up exhibition space, and looking at layouts. Although nothing is set in stone our plans look like I may be positioned in the center of the room.
Once designing spaces for everyone and looking at everyone's specific needs it seemed that my project was the most easily manipulated project which would suit the center of the room.
This does not bother me, but I will need to make some sizable considerations in regard to curation and technicalities, for example, displaying posters with no wall space, etc.
In relation to the other projects, it may benefit my exhibition piece to be away from the rest of the group as the topic is very different to everyone else’s and has more of a sensitive nature.
As of now from my exhibition, I would like to use mannequins the mannequins may be used to display designs, typography, and other graphic elements of the project. I looked around local adverts for people selling or donating mannequins from shops that were closing down but I had no luck.
I had seen an advert for mannequin busts online and I had contacted the seller. I arranged to meet her and she kindly donated 4 mannequin busts for me to use for my project. Unfortunately, there was some damage to the mannequins due to wear and tear. These will need a lot of work to make them look presentable if I were to use them in my project.
This could take up a lot of valuable time and with the current time scale for the project, I think I need to look elsewhere for mannequins that are in better condition and require less work. I decided the best person to go see was the textile technicians and see if I could borrow the mannequins from the college.
Thursday morning I met with Kelly the textile technician and we spoke about using the college's mannequins which did not end in my favor, as the college will need to reuse these mannequins it would not be possible to paint onto them.
I have contacted the likes of Swamp a clothing store which recently ceased trading and other fashion outlets to see if they had any mannequins they would either sponsor/ donate or I could buy, I have also spent more time on classified ad pages searching for them.
At the beginning of the week, I spent some time fixing up the half-bust mannequins I have mended the cracks and spray painted them white to make them more presentable.
During class on Thursday, we spent some time critiquing each other’s blogs under the following criteria: Usability, Design, Written Description, Links/ External Links, Overall comprehensive overview of the process, and finally some suggestions for improvement.
The feedback given to me was to add more descriptions/ reflective writing and more evidence of process work, sketches, etc. I also had a tutorial with Emma where she gave me feedback on my blog which had a similar outcome, reflective writing, descriptions, and proper citations.
Once talking about progress, she expressed that she is not keen on the idea of making up the stories inside my book which was initially suggested by John Watson. I do agree with Emma, although it would be easier and quicker it would knock all credibility off of the project and it would also fail the criteria of a research lead brief.
I have reached out to support groups such as Inis Aoibheann, Cancer Care West, Breast Cancer Ireland to seek willing participants and draft up questionnaires/ surveys and organize meetings with participants. If I do not get a certain number of participants, this may hinder the integrity of a book and the output may change drastically.
