At the beginning of this week, our class was canceled because we were having our work in progress review at the end of the week. This gave us time to properly curate our walls with all our work and prepare an elevator pitch to present to John Watson when he came into the class.

Each of us was given a few minutes with John to discuss our projects and explain the reasons why are doing our project, why we chose the topic we did, and where we wanted to go with our projects. The purpose of the elevator pitch was to give him an overall first impression of our work.

Through curating our wall space this gave us an opportunity to walk through our studio space and see each other’s work and how each of us was getting on.

He spoke to each of us individually about our projects on what he thought about them what he felt we needed to improve. He also gave us some general ideas on final outcomes for our projects. For example, he suggested a layout design for a book where tattoo designs could flow off an image through the page spread.

The feedback that he gave us was vital as he is an industry professional, he has worked on projects of this scale and bigger and he knows what works and what doesn't work.

I found that the feedback that he gave me was very helpful and will stand to me further on in my design process. After talking to him for a few minutes I had a clearer vision of my project and what it could possibly turn out to be.

I will definitely keep in mind his advice and work on the areas in which he suggested me to do so. In a separate post, I have outlined the entire meeting with John Watson and the feedback that he had given me.

The advice session with John helped us prepare for our presentation at the end of the week. We were each given 10 to 15 minutes to present our topic. In this presentation, we were to give a brief introduction to our topic, discuss our creative brief, our user personas, our research to date, our creative approach, our ideas/concepts, the project rationale, mood boards, tone of voice guidelines, schematics and initial visual designs.

We also were to show some early prototypes, initial exhibition plans, and a timeline for the rest of our project. We were asked to include how we plan to respond to the feedback we were given by John Watson.

Once I got to listen to the presentations given by my peers it gave me a good insight into how rigorous their projects were. It also gave us all an opportunity to see how each one of us works differently and how we may apply some of their techniques to our own project in order to gain as much knowledge on our topic as possible.

For example, some of our peers created infographics based on their research to date, in my opinion, this was a brilliant way of concisely conveying the research that they have done to date. It was great to see how the statistics were easily presentable in a single document, these documents were also a piece of graphic design which fitted in with the theme of their project. It was very pleasing to look at how the others had created nice graphics based on the results of surveys that they had conducted.

Moving forward I know I need to show more of my findings in a neat, concise way that also fits in with the aesthetic of the project. I myself find that when I am posting on my blog, I am leaving out key interactions and important parts of my design process. I need to document and post everything that I do in relation to this project.

For the following week, we will be looking at exhibition spaces and drafting schematics for the exhibition. I also need to focus on contacting services and support groups, because as of now I have not had much luck with getting in contact with the people I need to speak to.
