Week 4 Work Review

Last week I had identified the most important tasks to complete during this week. One of the main tasks was defining the project, I believe I've made some progress in this area originally I had decided on the ideas of tattoos to empower people by covering scars with tattoos be it from self-harm or cancer surgery scars.

Although they all fit the project I feel as if focusing on women with breast cancer scars would provide for a more meaningful project. There are so many cancer awareness campaigns aimed at women, but not many for the survivors of breast cancer.

I want to create a project which will raise awareness for the use of tattoos to cover breast cancer scars and how tattoos can be used as a tool to re-empower women by adorning or covering their scars.

Once I had made this decision, I began researching the area. In Ireland and the UK, there are only a few options offered to women who have had to undergo breast cancer surgery. Women who have had breast cancer surgery such as a mastectomy can choose to “stay flat” or have reconstructive surgery. Some will be offered nipple reconstruction tattoos but that is all.

From there I started researching and identifying industry professionals in a separate post I have written about industry professional David Allen, A tattoo artist who specialises in mastectomy tattoos. I feel it would be beneficial to contact him and perhaps interview him on his work.

I would also like to contact breast Cancer Support groups and counselors to find out more information on the area. I feel as if talking to these professionals will give me a greater insight into the topic and will also help me further on in the project when it comes to contacting participants and designing the project.

Talking to counselors and support groups will give me an insight into the nature of this project and perhaps help me empathise and deal with this project in a professional, respectful manner. I understand the sensitivity surrounding this topic and I need to keep that in mind if I am interviewing or surveying participants.

I am aware I have a lot more research to do and I would like to see if I can find any tattoo artist based in Ireland who are competent in the area of mastectomy tattoos. If I can identify any tattoo artists I would like to get in contact with them to see how many tattoos of this kind have they performed, do they feel that this is an area that is not well known or spoken about in Ireland.

From my research so far, it seems as if this topic is more widely known in America. Organisations such as Pink offer a service where they will find tattoo artists who are willing and competent to perform these tattoos and match them up with the clients. So far, I have only found two tattoo studios in the UK that perform these types of tattoos and specialise in them. I would like to maybe find out why there are not any studios like this in Ireland and maybe interview some tattoo artists on why that is the case.

Alongside researching I need to start preparing work for week 6 work review where we having a progress review on the work to date this includes research, moodboards, user personas, creative briefs, “how might we statements” and exhibition plans.
