This week I focused on designing posters for the backing of my exhibition piece. I wanted to create posters that were inviting and helped draw people in.
I also wanted the posters to convey the messages of the project. I wanted to try bring a fun and colourful look to the project to tie into the book design.
My initial concepts although they were bright and “fun” they were definitely not of a high design standard. I feel it went too far into the “fun” Category and looked a bit too childish.
I then decided I needed to refocus on the keywords for the project, “classy, eye-catching, graphic, feminine and powerful”.
I tried using a bold typeface and a soft colour to convey the message, then I added a simple line illustration to it to portray the idea of the woman/mannequin.
I liked how these came out and I feel that the single-breasted “woman/mannequin” helped hint at the target audience. I do feel this addition was a successful design decision.
To increase readability and contrast I added stronger colours to the background which helps the poster stand out. This way there would be no issues in clarity.
After many design iterations, I decided to add simple tattoo designs to the illustration to show the final element of the project. I believe this helped pull everything together cohesively.
I came up with a set of 3 designs that ideally would hang behind the book on display. As the posters are now complete, the next task is to create some simple mock-ups for merchandise.
