This week I had worked on the final set of revisions for the tattoo designs. Looking back from the first week of designs I hadn’t realised how much work actually goes into working with clients when designing tattoos.
Understandably so, a tattoo is for life and you need to be sure it is exactly what you want but I wasn’t aware of how much effort tattoo artists go through to keep their clients happy.
I had sent out all the new designs to each of the participants by the end of last week and I was relieved to see that everyone was happy with their designs in the end. This worked out perfectly as now I can focus on the other areas of the project.
I had also sent the designs onto a tattoo artist who I have been in contact with throughout this project for her feedback. This was important to get advice from a professional to see if these designs would work well on skin rather than on paper.
As I was awaiting her response I decided to tattoo one of the designs onto fake skin. Unfortunately, I had to shrink the design to fit onto the skin but overall it came out clean and no details were lost once tattooed.
Thankfully, the tattoo artist got back in contact with me and she was very impressed with the designs she said that they all would work as real tattoos as long as a competent artist was doing them. This was great to hear as I could move forward with the project and not worry about redesigning tattoos.
I needed to start working on the layout of the book as it will need to be sent out to print before it is too late. The companies I have been looking at were suggesting a maximum of a three-week turnaround, so I need to keep this in mind when it comes to printing the book.
Initially, with this exhibition I had planned on using mannequins as a focal point in my display. The mannequins would either display the tattoo designs or have the stories of the women on them.
I decided to play around with this concept digitally as my mannequins are in the college. I had pictures of the mannequins, so I uploaded them and started playing around in photoshop with them.
After a lot of thought, I have decided that it is best if I leave the mannequins out of the project. I feel like they do not exactly fit in with the book and would just distract too much from the purpose of the project.
For next week, the aim is to work on layout compositions and have finalised the layout design. I will also do some research into layouts as I have a specific style in mind that I would like to replicate.
