Week 2 Work Review

Updated: Jul 27, 2020

After a lot of consideration and consultations with my supervisors, I have decided to change my project topic. The decision came about as I was struggling to focus on my topic. I was unable to define the project and I had no idea what the project was or where it was going.

Originally the project was about identity and a sense of belonging, for example, the loss of culture and traditions. Initially, this topic was important to me as I wanted to include my family’s traditions and my South African heritage. One main issue I struggled with the most was focusing my project and narrowing it down.

Looking back, I realise I was trying to decide on the project outputs before having researched anything on the topic. I had too many ideas and with so many ideas I quickly became overwhelmed with the topic. I had lost all motivation and inspiration with the topic. Whilst researching and delving into my own family’s history it opened up a negative environment mentally, which was something I had not initially expected to happen. This in turn added to the reasoning behind switching topics.

I am aware of the implications and time constraints involved with changing topics so late into the brief and the semester, but I feel more confident pursuing this new topic for my research. From my past experience, I am aware that I must initially forget about the potential outcomes and focus on building a rigorous research-based foundation for this project.

The topic of empowering women is very dear to my heart and I feel as if that alone will assist me in creating a strong project. I have previously worked with organisations such as Cope and developing campaigns for the awareness of domestic violence and campaigns to support women.

In my previous post, I discussed in full why I changed my project and what the new project is all about. My previous experience and personal experiences with the topic could perhaps help me empathise with the end-users and develop a strong understanding of the user.

As this project is a human-centric project I will strive to provide as much evidence of interactions discussions and feedback that I am given where possible. For the upcoming week, I hope to draft up a survey/questionnaire and have my supervisors proofread it before sending it out.
