This week was the start of our two-week Easter break, although it was Easter it was imperative that I continued working on my project. I began by creating my contingency plan as requested by my supervisors under the new submission guidelines. I have outlined this in a separate post.

I spent some time watching some documentaries and podcasts of cancer survivors explaining their stories, as these were all interview-based I got somewhat of an understanding of the answers to the questions I had been asking people in my questionnaire.

By watching these documentaries I gained a more meaningful insight into the topic, as these were professional interviews it was good to see what kind of questions they were asking and how they phrase their questions in order to not be biased or asking leading questions. This in turn will help me in the future with further interviews.

As my questionnaire was sent out a few weeks ago, responses kept coming in slowly. From there I was able to create a profile for each person who had responded to the survey. I documented each of their answers and if they had any contact details left in their questionnaire for me. From each profile, I was able to pick out key phrases that included emotions and thoughts that each person had individually gone through.

In one of the questions, each participant was asked “if they were to get a tattoo to cover their scars what would it be?” this question was asked to get a general idea of what designs and elements the person may like. Through asking this question it set me up in a good position to create mood boards for each participant based on their answers and from there I can start designing tattoos.

Asides from the questionnaires I began designing the layout for the book. I knew I wanted to stick with the original concept of having a square book. I started by looking at different square books and getting a feel for what the dimensions should be. Then I brought it into InDesign and set up my document template the number of pages cannot be defined right now as this depends on how many participants are willing to be involved.

I spent some time looking at book design and checking out book cover design awards from the past few years. As I had done my 3rd-year work experience in a book publishing company, I had experience in researching and developing a concept for a book cover.

From my past experience, I knew I needed to start with some field research. This was usually done by going into bookstores and seeing what book cover immediately grabbed your attention. From there you can break down the elements that caught your eye and why they caught your eye.

As we are currently experiencing a lockdown where travel is prohibited and shops are shut this field research cannot be done in person, but it can be done online. Obviously, there is quite a difference in outcomes this way, but it is still a good means of research.

I knew I wanted to keep it clean It also attracts people’s attention. This is where I decided maybe to have a logo or illustration on the front of the book which would draw the audience in. I will work on designing concepts for this cover.

I would like to create some concepts for a logo or illustration, and this will be the aim for the next week. I would also like to get some feedback on my logo see what people think and see if people think it is appropriate by giving them a few options to choose from.

I will aim to have completed all the mood boards for each participant by the end of the week. Other tasks that I need to look into are designing my website, I will discuss the purpose and the design of the website in a separate post.
