Week 10 Work Review

This week was very different, it was the first full week of working from home and working completely online. Although we do have the necessary technologies at our disposal, this week presented new challenges that we would have to overcome fast.

I began the week with a tutorial with my supervisor Emma I spoke about my project progress and where I was at with the project. She had voiced her concerns about my project stating that she feels it is too broad and that I need to focus down more and know my own project. She also advised me not to be swayed to change the output based on what people suggest to me.

This came about as I was talking to a participant who had asked if I could tell her story. She had a very negative experience with the doctor in regard to her breast cancer treatment and her decision to stay flat. Although I agree with her and empathize with her, I do not want to use my project to incite negativity and call out other people’s actions.

The project vision is to convey a message of hope, power, strength, beauty, and empowerment. I want the participants to regain their strength and help them, heal the mental scars they may be left with. I also want other women to stand with women and help this message of friendship, hope, and solidarity. We see countless stories of women tearing down each other over social media etc and I would like to incite change for this.

Emma had asked to see transcripts of my conversations with participants and my other contacts in regard to the project. This in turn should help people see my design process and see why I made or will make certain design decisions. Following on I will be posting separately the transcripts of the conversations I have had with different individuals.

I have sent out my online survey after countless attempts to contact different organisations to see if they could distribute my surveys. Understandably, organisations were not willing to participate due to the concerns of Covid-19.

This week I also spent some time looking into the symbolism and meanings behind different tattoo designs. This will provide me with vital information when it comes to designing tattoos for the participants. The aim of the week is to have identified the participants and set up interviews with them.
