In this journal the debate is that tattooed individuals are still stigmatised despite the growth of tattoos in modern day society. They claim that tattooed people are perceived to be more negative characters and as more deviant that those non-tattooed individuals. They carried out two studies one on college students and one on community members. The study was carried out by showing both groups images of tattooed men and women and also showing them the same men and women with their tattoos digitally removed. Both groups were asked a series of questions and the results presented themselves that the tattooed individuals especially the women were seen as more independent and stronger than those without tattoos. They also showed that those with tattoos were negatively rated on other characteristics and traits as well as other aspects. The results of the studies show that there was still a stigma attached to tattoos and the people who choose to have them even though tattooing continued to rise in pop culture.
