Initially, I had a layout concept for the book where the tattoo designs would illustrate the pages. For example.
Although I did quite like this layout idea I wanted to exclude the use of photography as I did not want to ask the women for photographs of their scars. Instead I wanted to make it a bit more graphic. I had a keen interest in making the design of the layout bold and bright.
I was heavily influenced by designer Paula Scher whose work is very much in the realm of being both bold and bright. Although I want to imitate this style, I have to be careful to keep the theme in mind and not stray too far from the sensitive nature of the project.
I tried out multiple designs in InDesign based on the premises of the book being a square hardback book. This narrowed down my layout options quite drastically, but I did not want to stray from the thoughts of the square book.
I tried a few layouts and put some place holder images and text in to see what it could potentially look like, but I struggled to find one that would suit the project.
I knew I needed to bulk the book out somehow as I could not have 12 pages, so I decided I wanted to have an introductory spread for each separate participant’s story. The introductory spread was to contain a quote from each of the women’s stories. A quote that would initially grab your attention.
To keep with the idea of each person’s individuality I decided it would be best to pair each participant with a colour. This colour would provide the background colour for the introduction spread but also the bordering colour on the page containing their story.
Once I had decided this, I began by dropping all the information into place and making sure all the imaged and stories matched up. This was also my opportunity to ensure that no spelling mistakes were being made through the print copy of the file.
